On Friday, Om Prakash Chautala, former Haryana chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader died at 89, after a prolonged illness. He suffered cardiac arrest at his Gurugram residence and was then immediately taken to the Medanta Hospital of Gurugram but doctors couldn’t save him.

Chautala was a powerful figure in Haryana as he was a four-time CM of the state.He had also been seven times MLA. He was the son of the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Devi Lal. He was from a very powerful political family lineage. His father was also a two-time CM of Haryana.

Legal Obstacles for Chautala

He has been caught up in some controversies, even after having such a vast and successful governance. He was found involved in a recruitment scam, for which he was convicted of 10 years in prison in 2013. He only served nine and half years in prison due to good behavior. He was released from Tihar jail in July 2021.

Despite being caught up in legal troubles, he played a major role in shaping the politics of the state of Haryana. His two sons and three daughters survive him. His family and friends are mourning his loss and several big leaders have paid tribute to him. He will always be remembered as a great leader in the Political History of Haryana.
