With the winter chill settling in, a spiking number of respiratory infections- especially HMPV- has begun to take over hospitals in China, leading healthcare officials to further concerns about a healthcare crisis.
While acknowledging the increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, China has allegedly attempted to dismiss the hype as “annual seasonal reoccurrence.” According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the current increase in cases could even be “attributed to the winter season.” He attempted to assure tourists and citizens that it is still safe to travel in the country.
Do You Know HMPV Was Discovered In 2001?
Human Metapneumovirus was discovered two decades ago. Still, there is no identified vaccine even after twenty-four years.
What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) symptoms of fever and chill or cough are most probably caused by a respiratory virus in the winter or early spring. It is usually associated with cold symptoms and rhinitis and can cause mild to moderate respiratory illnesses in most people. It is capable of spreading from an infected person via contacting surfaces. It is related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other viruses like measles and mumps. There are no vaccines against it, nor is there any antiviral treatment. It causes minor illness in most cases, and rest and hydration suffice to manage the symptoms. There can be severe illness, however, leading to hospitalization, oxygen therapy, or corticosteroids in some cases.
HMPV is transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals or surfaces. It is similar to other respiratory viruses, including RSV, measles, and mumps, but unlike Covid-19, has no vaccine or antiviral treatments. Most cases are mild and managed with rest and hydration at home, but severe cases may need hospitalization, oxygen therapy, IV fluids, or corticosteroid treatments.
