On Monday night, Kannada Actress & daughter of Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation) Ramachandra Rao, Ranya Rao, was arrested on charges of gold smuggling at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended her with over 14 kg of gold.
Charged with possession of 14.8 kg gold, to be precise
On Tuesday evening, Ranya Rao was produced before the judge on the charge of possessing 14.8 kg of gold. Then, she was sent to 14-day judicial custody. A judge from a special court of financial crimes issued this order. The actress had to go through a medical examination at Bowring hospital, before she was sent to judicial custody. According to sources, Ranya claimed that she went to Dubai for business.
The DRI had kept a watch on her
The DRI found that she had travelled to Dubai four times in the previous 15 days, and the agency went after tracking her movements. Based on this intel, the DRI officers showed up at the airport two hours before Ranya’s arrival on March 3. She came in from Dubai by the Emirates flight and was intercepted at the Bengaluru airport just around 7 pm on Monday.
