Renowned tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain has sadly passed away in a hospital in San Francisco, USA due to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He had been admitted to the hospital for the past two weeks and as his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), where he took his last breath.
He was born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai. He is left by his wife Antonia Minnecola and his daughters Anisa Quereshi and Isabella Quereshi. He died at the age of 73. He was the son of the legendary tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. His father taught him the art of playing tabla. He started performing in concerts at the age of 7.
The Government of India gave the awards Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and finally Padma Vibhushan in 2023 to Ustad Zakir Hussain. In his carrer of six decades, he won four Grammy Awards.
