No escape route from the US tariffs for Mexico and Canada that will take effect Tuesday. US President Donald Trump sanctioned this on Monday. Let us find out in detail what the US President’s remarks on Monday about the tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico.
In reply to a query during the investment announcement on Monday about whether a deal could be negotiated should Canada and Mexico be relieved from tariffs, Trump replied, “The tariffs are all ready and will go into effect on March 4, 2025.” Trump said that Mexico now has no way out of the tariffs.
In the first week of February, after coming into power for the second time, the newly elected US President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada. An additional 10 percent tariff on imports from China was declared simultaneously. After this, Trump delayed the tariff on Mexico and Canada for 30 days on February 4.
During this time, the US President stated that guarantees on border security from both countries had been received. After making calls with his counterparts from both countries, the US President decided to postpone the tariff for 30 days.
Meanwhile, he added on Truth’s social media, “The great farmers of America should get ready to produce lots of agricultural products which can be sold in their country. Tax will be imposed on products coming from abroad from April 2, enjoy.”
Last month, Trump alleged that illegal drugs were entering the country from the Canadian-Mexican border and imposed tariffs against both countries starting March 4 and reciprocal tariffs “in full force” on April 2.
“Drugs are making their way into our border in fairly high and unacceptable quantities from Mexico and Canada,” Trump mentioned in a Truth Social post last February. China is responsible for making a very large quantity of these drugs and supplying them. More than 100,000 people died last year from the distribution of these dangerous and highly addictive poisons.”
Trump cited transgressions of drugs across the border into the US and vowed to put a stop to or “at the very least severely limit” drug importations, particularly fentanyl. “Millions of people have died over the course of the last two decades. The families of these victims have been devastated and, in many cases, nearly ruined. We cannot let this scourge harm America, and so until it is stopped, or severely limited, by tariffs will go into effect as scheduled March 4th.”
The US will also impose an additional 10 percent tariff against China from March 4, apart from Mexico and Canada. “An additional 10 percent tariff will also be imposed on China. The second reciprocal tariff will be fully implemented on the scheduled date of April,” Trump confirmed.
