Last week, the whole world witnessed the heated debate in the Oval Office between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. In this session, Trump reprimanded Zelensky very sharply. Although Zelensky had received prior warning hours before meeting Trump, he seemed to have taken this advice lightly, and then the world saw the consequence.
Ukrainian President ignored Republican Party’s advice
American media stated that Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had advised Zelensky several hours before the meeting with Trump that should any dispute arise in the talks where he had to face some criticism, he should not react to that. In other words, he should not get angry if provoked but rather keep his cool. However, in any case, the Ukrainian leader was at fault. When discussions about Russia-Ukraine ceasefire came up, each side verbally attacked the other and the talks derailed.
Zelensky could have avoided this argument by paying attention to the advice
It is noted that Trump is always adamant that Ukraine should come to a peace agreement with Moscow. But Ukraine and all its European allies are not happy about this. Not happy, either, is Trump. When he met with Zelensky at the Oval Office, he started by joking about some dresses on Zelensky, saying, ‘You have come fully prepared.’ Somehow, during that time, Zelensky managed to deal with it and kept smiling.
After this, when the meeting started, everything was going well and the two leaders were talking politely. At that point, Vice President JD Vance entered the discussion and accused the Ukrainian leader of not being grateful for the help being given by America and raised questions on Ukrainian diplomacy. Here, Zelensky made a mistake and he turned around and asked JD Vance, ‘What kind of diplomacy, JD?’ Vance interpreted it as a direct challenge. Thus, he moved one step ahead and accused Zelensky of disrespecting the US President. Thereafter, Trump also went on the offensive and scolded Zelensky a lot.
An escalation took place after Zelensky stated that the Russian menace is a long-term threat also to the USA. He said, ‘You have a nice sea, and you do not feel that threat now; however, you will feel it in the future.’ This was sufficient for Trump to get all furious and throw the verbal javelins at Zelensky, finally terminating the meeting.
