Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, announced to the nation on Monday that general elections can be held in late 2025 or early 2026. This decision is the result of building pressure to set a date for the parliamentary elections.
Nobel Peace prize winner Yunus, has been given the responsibility of handling the administration of the toppling government of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August, after student-led protests, entered the PM’s residence in Dhaka.
Announcement on Bangladesh’s Independence Day
On the 53rd anniversary of the independence of Bangladesh, President Mohammad Shahabuddin and the leader of the interim government Mohammad Yunus, were present in the capital Dhaka, where chief advisor Yunus addressed the nation to inform them that elections will be held on the guidelines of the Electoral Reforms Commission and that most probably will be in the late of next year or early 2026.
No Vijay Diwas Parade
The tradition of organizing the Vijay Diwas parade was not followed on this independence day. This was because the armed forces were busy dealing with the people’s agitation.
Why did Sheikh Hasina’s government fall?
It was due to her decision to give 30% reservation in jobs. This led to nationwide protests by students, which ultimately forced her to leave the country. The military took over the country for some time, but as some time passed, an interim government was formed, appointing Mohammad Yunus as chief advisor for the country.
