Two bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha to enable One Nation One Election throughout the nation. They were the Constitution (129th Amendment) bill and the Union Territories Amendment bill. The BJP & its allies have supported the bills while the INDIA bloc has strongly opposed the bills. According to the BJP, this bills will be very beneficial for India, cost-effectively.
Overall, 32 parties are in favor of the process of holding simultaneous elections while 15 parties oppose this development. Parties like Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP, BRS, and AIADMK have also backed the One Nation One Election move.
The opposition parties are calling this move an initiative to introduce dictatorship in India and are strongly opposing this development. Let’s see the statements of some parties opposing these bills:
AIMIM
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that this bills will put an end to regional parties.
Shiv Sena (UBT)
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said the bills are meant to tamper with the election process and are an attack on the Indian Constitution.
Congress
MP Jairam Ramesh said that this bills are unconstitutional and this will suppress the democracy of India.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has indicated that the joint parliamentary committee, comprising 27 MPs from the Lok Sabha and 12 MPs from the Rajya Sabha, will look into the bills and will thereafter send its recommendations to the Lok Sabha Speaker.
