India insists that the United Nations Security Council and its allied bodies must hold the operations transparent. It is said that whenever a case is made to blacklist terrorist organizations, a reason for the acceptance or rejection or putting it on hold should be given. While addressing an inter-governmental conference at the UN, P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said there was an urgent pressing need to reform the United Nations Security Council.
Need to bring transparency in the functioning of UNSC
P. Harish said that ‘Our demand for change in the UNSC is clear. This becomes all the more important when questions are being raised on the effectiveness of the UN in the world when it becomes paralyzed on key issues concerning humanity.’ P. Harish said that there is a need for transparency in the functioning of the Security Council’s related bodies. “For example, the decisions that put a person or entity on a public list are well known, while details of decisions taken to reject or put requests on technical hold are kept secret. This is a hidden veto,” P. Harish said.
India doubts on China’s intentions
Questioning the intention of China, Indian ambassador stated that on several previous occasions, China has thwarted the efforts of India to get Pakistan-based terrorist organizations banned. “Most of the United Nations member states support Security Council reform; however, efforts in that regard have practically been none. For this reason, we have had discussions and meetings, but nothing changed. The member states should now stop wasting more time in talks and start to act.”
