On Sunday, US President Donald Trump signed an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to America’s Gulf. Donald Trump signed this order while he was flying over the US Gulf in his official aircraft Air Force One on a trip to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Donald Trump had recently proposed changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to America’s Gulf and now has officially signed that order.
What was Trump’s reason for renaming the gulf?
It is to be noted that the Gulf of Mexico has been called this for the last 400 years. Nevertheless, Trump says it was called the Gulf of Mexico because of New Mexico, the American city. Announcing the change of name of the Gulf, Trump stated that it should be named after America because America has most of its control. Mexico and Cuba also share in it. For America, this Gulf is mainly used for economic activities, mainly fishing, power generation, and trade. Trump said that the Gulf of Mexico is our area and should be known as the Gulf of America.
Trump is fuming over Mexico
Trump might have renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, but frankly, the other countries of the world do not abide by this decree. This course taken by Trump is being construed as yet another action against Mexico. Trump has alleged that Mexico is complicit in narcotic smuggling and in facilitating illegal immigration into the United States. Tariffs on Canada were recently imposed by him alongside those on Mexico. However, later he put a stay on it for a few days.
