The US, which has been rooting for Ukraine up to this point, is starting to align itself with Russia. The US pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a compromise and has now hit Ukraine with more pressure at the UN: Ukraine should withdraw its proposal to the United Nations backed by the European countries calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops.
Three United Nations proposals have been brought forward
All this in a week that the US has once more refused to apportion any blame to Russia in the invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, on Monday, three proposals were brought by the United Nations to end the three-year-long war. The US has voted against these proposals, which is the first such action by the US against its European allies on the Russia-Ukraine issue.
US voted against the Ukrainian resolution
In the United Nations General Assembly, the US joined Russia in voting against the Ukrainian resolution introduced by the European countries. This resolution condemned the aggression of Moscow and called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. The 15-member United Nations Security Council had passed this resolution with 10 votes for and 5 abstentions including France.
Split between US and Europe in the United Nations
These days, Americans and Europeans are deeply divided over everything related to the Russia-Ukraine war. Three resolutions were put to vote in the United Nations General Assembly. The first resolution condemned Russian aggression and called for immediate troop withdrawal from Ukraine. This resolution had 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 countries such as India abstained.
Where US stands after this?
brought forth its own rival proposal to seek the end of the war but was silent on the matter of Russian aggression. When France and the European nations added amendments to it and declared Russia an aggressor, the US chose to refrain from voting. The US also had a vote on its own proposal in the United Nations Security Council, where 10 in the 15-member council supported it and 5 European nations abstained from voting. The divergence in opinions between America and Europe concerning the Russia-Ukraine war is now becoming clearer. The US is now refraining from blaming Russia in the direct context, which might create new complications in international politics.
