The number of suspected cases of GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) in Maharashtra has crossed two hundred. Eight people died in a month due to suspected GBS following the first death caused by this disease in Mumbai. Pune has the highest number of GBS patients with an increasing number.
As per health department officials, the suspected and confirmed cases of GBS in and around Pune have increased to 203. A health department release states that out of these, 176 are being treated for GBS. Of these, 52 patients are in ICUs and 20 of them are on ventilator support. Apart from 41 patients under the Pune Municipal Corporation, 94 patients from rural areas, 29 from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and 31 from Pune rural, 8 patients from other counties are being treated for suspected GBS at various hospitals.
Symptoms of the disease – GBS
GBS is a rare disease related to the nervous system. The symptoms of this disease are similar to those of swine flu, such as cold, cough, and jelly fever. Because of this, muscles become weak and body parts become numb.
Help sent to Pune
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the rise in GBS cases, had sent a seven-member team on 27 January to Pune. Meanwhile, with the GBS outbreak, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had directed the administration to make special arrangements in government hospitals for the treatment of GBS patients.
