On Thursday night, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away due to age-related health issues. He died at the age of 92. He was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi as his health deteriorated & lost consciousness at his residence. Doctors at AIIMS couldn’t save him despite their best efforts. He breathed his last on 26th December 2024. He was often called the architect of India’s economic reform program and also known for signing a historic nuclear deal with the United States.
He was a man of principles, who happened to serve as Indian PM for about 10 years, making him one of the longest-serving prime ministers of India, as well as the leader of the Congress Party in Parliament’s Upper House. He won acclaim as a man of great personal integrity. This office was given to him in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, widow of the assassinated Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
Prime Minister Modi, who succeeded Singh in office in 2014, called him one of India’s “most distinguished leaders” because he rose from humble origins and “left a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years.” As per sources, a seven-day national mourning has been declared across the country to honor his legacy.
